Partnership Philosophy

The IDF was conceived as a public-private partnership and a member driven organisation from inception.

Its philosophy and unique value proposition are to bring the insurance industry’s capabilities to bear in emerging markets and developing economies to help close protection gaps through concrete programmes, projects and initiatives—in partnership with the public sector. To help build future-ready nations.

Closing protection gaps and driving greater use of insurance capabilities in countries which need it most, is an inherently complex endeavour. It requires the effort of many, in close collaboration. It includes sharing risk management knowledge, enhancing access to risk understanding and risk modelling, driving disaster risk reduction, designing risk transfer solutions, investing in resilience, and advocating for relevant policy development and regulatory change.

This is why IDF members and partners – the IDF Change Agents – stand for a strong commitment to contribute their expertise, resources and capital, and to persevere in the pursuit of our shared vision and mission.

Members versus Partners

While the IDF is a public-private partnership in that it brings both sectors together to engage in its work, we differentiate between “members” and “partners”, although we usually refer to them as one large group.

Members

IDF considers as members those organisations whose members formally join it in one or more of its bodies (the Steering and/or Operating Committees, and/or the Working Groups or Task Forces), contributing to its efforts and attending its meetings on an ongoing, regular basis.

Partners

IDF considers as partners those organisations who work with the IDF for specific efforts or initiatives, without formally joining one of its bodies.

These efforts and initiatives can range from a specific project to the development of a joint publication, or the organisation of a specific convening.

On this basis, the national, regional or city governments and other public agencies who choose to partner with the IDF to co-lead a project, fall into this category.
