Michael J McCord

Michael J. McCord is one of the world’s leading microinsurance experts. His decades of experience include working as controller of a U.S. commercial bank, chief executive officer of a microfinance institution in Uganda, and regional director for microfinance programs in Africa with FINCA International.

In 2000, Michael founded the MicroInsurance Centre (now the MicroInsurance Centre at Milliman, MIC@M), an internationally recognized thought leader and implementer of microinsurance and risk management solutions. The MIC@M’s vision is to provide three billion low-income people across the world with access to valuable microinsurance and risk management solutions.

Michael is a highly respected voice in the microinsurance field, working in the areas of research, advocacy, and development of microinsurance products and processes that meet the unique needs of low-income clients while providing a business case for insurers and distribution partners. He has worked in over 90 countries, leading consulting projects focused on a variety of risks that low-income clients face. Recent work includes developing and implementing climate risk insurance products for MFI clients in Pakistan (livestock and crop) and Malawi (crop), providing technical advisory and review for feasibility assessments on climate and agriculture microinsurance in multiple countries, advising insurers on microinsurance strategy development in multiple developing markets, providing support to insurance regulatory authorities, providing guidance for the development of climate resilience pilots in Pakistan and India, and providing technical support for an insurance protection gap analysis for the Maldives.

Michael is a founding member of the Microinsurance Network, where he served as chair of the board from 2015 – 2016, and a member of the steering committee for the Munich Re Foundation / Microinsurance Network annual conference on inclusive insurance. He is a current member of the United Nations Capital Development Fund’s (UNCDF) Climate Insurance Linked Resilient Infrastructure Finance (CILRIF) Working Group, and a member of the Insurance Development Forum’s (IDF) Inclusive Insurance Working Group, Operating Committee Leadership Team, and representative of our Sterring Committee member. The MicroInsurance Centre at Milliman is an organizational member of the InsuResilience Global Partnership. Michael also serves on the Editorial Board of the Bangladesh Insurance Journal. Michael is now honored and pleased to serve as an Honorary Director of the Risk and Insurance Studies Centre’s (RISC) Diploma in Risk and Insurance Management at York University.
